Rheine. March 10 marks the anniversary of the Tibetan people’s uprising of 1959, which the Chinese occupying forces put down in blood. Since 1996, cities across Germany have been sending a signal for human rights on this day by participating in the “Show the Flag for Tibet” campaign of the Tibet Initiative Germany. Rheine is also taking part.
This year the campaign takes place against the background of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine underlines the need to also fundamentally rethink the policy towards the second authoritarian great power – towards China. The Tibet Initiative calls for democracies worldwide to pay attention to the situation of persecuted people in Tibet, East Turkestan (Xinjiang) and China. The raising of the Tibetan flag is a symbol of non-violent resistance, justice and freedom worldwide.
