When it is cold here, many go south.

When temperatures in the Netherlands are similar to those here, they head east…

At least that’s what happened today to 25 men and women from Borne, who set off early in the morning at 2 degrees to the twin city Rheine.

And they did so by bicycle, because the new “Vriedenweg” had to be inaugurated. The bike path, which was developed for the 40th anniversary of the twinning between Borne and Rheine.

This tour was one of the highlights of this anniversary year.

Around noon, the friends from Borne arrived in the city park and were enthusiastically welcomed by the members of the twinning association. And not only by them, but by hundreds of visitors to the traditional Father’s Day barbecue.

Cycling was a perfect fit for this tour, because at the same time the starting signal was given for this year’s city cycling campaign under the motto “We’re defending our title”. The aim of this three-week campaign is not only to collect as many kilometers as possible, but also to do something for climate protection and one’s own health.

“The fact that such encounters as today take place is thanks to the partner committee Borne and the town twinning association Rheine,” praised Deputy Mayor Fabian Lenz in his welcoming speech. “Through their energetic work, meetings are organized and carried out or sometimes simply initiated. Many thanks at this point for this commitment!”

After all, he said, many town twinning arrangements existed for the most part only on paper, or there was the obligatory visit once a year by the heads of administration or council members.

“Fortunately, this is not the case with this partnership between Borne and Rheine, this partnership has many facets and pillars and the best thing about it is that many friendships have grown out of it.”

The guests from Borne were met by a small delegation from Rheine at Lake Offlum in Neuenkirchen.
The employees of Rheine.Tourismus.Veranstatungen had prepared an anniversary area in the city park.
In the entire city park European flags were to be seen for the greeting of the guests.
After the welcome there was a pleasant get-together between friends.
Chairman Reiner Wellmann (r.) toasted the partnership with a special guest: Rob Welten, former mayor of Borne and now working in the same function in Haaksbergen, is president of the Euregio Council.
Ready for the return journey were the “bikes”, decorated with European flags.
