Before the big move

As part of the redesign of the city hall center, the municipal library is also to be completely modernized.

Alternative location for the municipal library on Osnabrücker Straße

Rheine. Work begins on the “functional expansion, restructuring and modernization of the town hall center, including the library”. The municipal library is moving out of the town hall center for the duration of the construction work. All those hungry for education should stock up on media by Saturday, August 20, 2022, because the library will not reopen at the interim location until mid-October. Loan periods do not end until the end of October. All of the library’s digital offerings will be available without restriction despite the move.

Temporary location on Osnabrücker Straße

The municipal library in Rheine will be closed from August 22 until mid-October. For the time of the extensive rebuilding measures in the city hall center the library moves temporarily to the Osnabrücker Straße 84 (former TOOM market).

As part of the redesign of the Town Hall Center, the municipal library will be completely renovated and modernized. The library has developed a concept that describes the future requirements for libraries due to social and technological changes.

The rejuvenated library will become a meeting place for the urban society, a digital competence center and the portal to lifelong learning and educational opportunities; it will be a place of integration and participation. The library will be located for the most part on the first floor of the city hall center, with large window fronts facing the bus station and Staelscher Hof. There will be a close connection to a café. The upper area of the library will be accessed via a generous staircase. Upstairs, there are many workstations and rooms and, as a highlight, a reading roof garden. “The library in the modernized City Hall Center will help keep the city lovable and attractive. For the necessary renovation measures, we therefore accept the effort of moving to an alternative location and hope that visitors to the library will find their way to Osnabrücker Straße. All services will be fully available there. We expect to be back up and running by mid-October. Of course, our digital offerings will be available around the clock without interruption,” comments Elsbeth Wigger.

The library in the former Toom-Markt on Osnabrücker Straße is easy to reach. A bus stop is almost at the door, parking spaces can be used free of charge and bicycles can also be parked. The library room is bright and friendly – a highlight here is certainly the “Berlin Wall”. Original parts are displayed in the window area. This is where history comes alive. “We place the biographies near these historical exhibits,” reports Elsbeth Wigger.

The library’s relocation should be completed by the beginning of 2024. Then the next move is due and it will go back to the city center.
