Getting started with ‘low literacy’

On September 14, municipality Borne together with municipalities Haaksbergen, Hengelo and Hof van Twente organized a theme meeting “Getting started with low literacy” in the national week of Reading and Writing. In the Netherlands, 2.5 million people have difficulty with reading, writing and digital skills. Alderman Michael Geerdink participated in a panel and emphasized the importance of tackling low literacy so that everyone can participate. Identifying, discussing and referring is essential in this regard. Prior to the meeting, the theater group De Nederlandse Taalshow gave an interactive and humorous show about how complicated the Dutch language can sometimes be.

Residents of municipality Borne who want to improve their command of the Dutch language are welcome to visit the Taalhus. This is located in the Kulturhus. In addition, every Wednesday from 9.30 – 11.00 a.m. there is the Taalcafé in the space ‘Sterrenstof’ in the Kulturhus. In the Taalcafé, residents can practice the Dutch language in a pleasant and relaxed manner. Under the guidance of a volunteer a variety of topics are discussed. Every month there is a new theme that is central during the language café, examples are: living, health and work. Residents who want to learn how to use a computer are also welcome in the Kulturhus. Another possibility is to drop in at the Social Hus. This is possible every Monday from 16.00 – 18.30 and Tuesday to Friday from 9.00 – 11.30 or by appointment (tel. 074-2658590 or ).
