War refugees arrived in Leiria in good health

On Thursday another bus with people from Ukraine is expected – Gertrudenstift provides overnight accommodation again

LEIRIA/RHEINE. The city of Leiria received a group of 51 Ukrainian refugees late Monday night. They had arrived in Warsaw last week after a long flight from the embattled cities of Ukraine. The group had spent the night from Saturday to Sunday in Rheine at the Gertrudenstift. It had been the first night in a warm bed for most of them after days of flight.

Of this group, which includes 25 children and young people up to 20 years, 19 aged between 21 and 50 years and six with more than 50 years, 31 people are housed in homes of friends and 20 in the municipal stadium. Three left for Belgium with the bus provided by the Municipality of Leiria.

Upon arrival, the mayor of Leiria, Gonçalo Lopes, welcomed the refugees on behalf of the people of Leiria and reiterated that the municipality and the civic community will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to the Ukrainian population.

The city of Leiria has established a temporary reception center for refugees in the municipal stadium Dr. Magalhães Pessoa, where two dozen team cabins were converted into rooms with 54 beds.

In addition to the stadium, a network developed through the collaboration of companies and institutions such as Secil in Maceira and the Diocesan Seminary of Leiria, which provided housing and rooms for families from Ukraine, expanded by 16 more beds.

In addition to these refugees, the municipality of Leiria had already welcomed 18 refugees in the municipal stadium Dr. Magalhães Pessoa.
