Last week Wednesday two male Djelada arrived at the Nature Zoo from Parco Natura Viva in Italy. Since this week they are with the females on the enclosure and are supposed to take over the leadership of the harems.
Djelada females choose which male they accept as harem leader. So it depends not only on the new males but also on how well the females like them.
The selection of the animals to be brought together is based on different factors, which have to be weighed in the course of a studbook. On the one hand of course the pedigree plays an important role to be able to guarantee a high genetic diversity, on the other hand also social compatibility and age of the animals are of great importance. The two new males are already 12 years old and normally it is better to establish younger animals as new harem leaders…however, the genes of the newcomers are especially important for the population and offspring are highly desired. So in this case it was decided to give these jeladas a chance to reproduce even though they have already reached a certain age.
