Celebrated and suffered together

Graduation evening for the students from Leiria

Rheine. After eventful days with many insights, the farewell evening for 18 students from Leiria, who have been staying in the Emsstadt since Monday, took place on Thursday. The young people, the guest students and also the host parents met for this purpose in the event room of the Portuguese Leisure Center on Stoverner Straße. This joint event had been brought forward because the guest students of the Kopernikus-Gymnasium took part in the school’s Christmas concerts on Friday.

Clemens Schöpker, who had organized and accompanied the exchange on behalf of the town twinning association Rheine, welcomed all participants in the packed hall. Peter had sent cold air masses to Germany, but at least the exchange students had been spared snow and rain during their visit to Rheine. He thanked in particular the host parents for the accommodation and care of the young Portuguese.

The kitchen of the leisure center had prepared delicious hors d’oeuvres and hearty food from the grill. Hearty and ultimately tasty food awaited the hosts at the same time in the last preliminary round match of the German national soccer team, which was running in the background on a large screen. There, fate took its course. The Portuguese exchange students smirked politely, but did not show any malice in the face of the tragedy for German soccer…

A serenade was dedicated in the further course of the evening to the Portuguese exchange student Martha, who celebrated her 18th birthday in Rheine on Thursday. Together the guests from Leiria and the German students sang and congratulated on this special birthday.

After a day of sightseeing in Münster, the young Portuguese will spend the last two days of their stay with their host families, who will certainly take the guests to the Christmas markets in the neighboring upper centers. On Monday, the guests from Leiria will fly back to Portugal from Amsterdam, where 16 degrees Celsius – but also rain showers – await the sunny southern Europeans.
