MALE TIGER DIED IN NATURE ZOO

Farewell to an animal personality in the NaturZoo Rheine: On Sunday, October 16, 2022, the Sumatran tiger male “Kabus” passed away.

The tiger had been conspicuous for over a week with changing appetite, reluctance to move and long periods of rest and sleep, but not with specific signs of illness. To establish a diagnosis, Kabus was anesthetized on Sunday and examined by our contracted veterinarian. Due to changes in the spleen and blood count, lymphoma was diagnosed. In addition, the kidney values were elevated. During the examination, kidney failure occurred and consequently death occurred. The animal was handed over to the Veterinary Investigation Office in Münster for pathological examination.

Kabus was born in 2008 in the English zoo Chessington. From there, he moved a year later to Belfast Zoo, from where he arrived in Rheine in August 2018. Here, at the request of the European Breeding Program (EEP) for tigers, he was to reproduce with the cat “Naga” – which he did very quickly after being left together: on January 8.

2019, the triplets “Zuma”, “Tipah” and “Leopold” were born and raised, for a time in the direct presence of the father, until he became too stressed by the wild courtship of his half-strong cubs and preferred to watch the growth of his offspring from a safe distance.

Kabus was known as a tiger that was easy to handle and always followed the food: For a lump of meat, he allowed himself to be directed through all departments of the tiger facilities.

The tiger breeding program has been notified of Kabus’ death. The species coordinator will now develop a plan for how to proceed with tiger husbandry at the Nature Zoo. For now, Naga the cat will inhabit the enclosure alone.
