The parliamentary groups in the council of the city of Rheine are in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and declare their readiness to receive refugees

Russia’s military attack on Ukraine has shaken us all. The war against the people of Ukraine is a breach of international law and an attack on the Ukrainians’ right to self-determination. The Russian invasion is bringing suffering and death to Ukraine. This war is right outside our border and is a direct threat to us as well. Many citizens of Ukraine are fleeing the war zone to the European Union. In addition, there are global refugee movements from war and crisis areas. Ukrainian refugees – in addition to the general situation of people seeking protection – are also to be expected in German communities. We are ready to accept refugees in an uncomplicated way and in solidarity and to grant them protection in Rheine. To this end, the city of Rheine will expand the capacities that can be made available. We are ready to receive and we are receptive. Rheine has a committed and helpful refugee assistance, which we want to support actively.

We support the flagging with the European flag in front of the town hall as a sign of solidarity for Ukraine and we support the rallies for peace in Ukraine on Saturday at 6:30 pm on Borneplatz.

The parliamentary group chairmen

Andree Hachmann (CDU) Dominik Bems (SPD), Silke Friedrich (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen), Detlef Brunsch (FDP), Rainer Ortel (UWG Rheine), Annette Floyd-Wenke (Die Linke) and Detlef Weßling (BfR).
