Delegation from the twin town Bernburg on a night watchman tour by André Schaper

The city tour by and with night watchman André Schaper started at Falkenhfo.

Once a year there are the Rheine-Bernburg-days. Alternately people from the two twin towns visit each other. This year a delegation from Bernburg under the leadership of mayor Dr. Silvia Ristow came today to Rheine and experienced after a common dinner the twin city with a night watchman guidance. André Schaper took on the role of the night watchman and explained the history and significance of the Falkenhof and other sights in the city center.

The high-water marks at the Emsmühle attracted particular interest. Here, the highest mark dates back to February 10, 1946, when the city center was completely under water and great damage was caused.

Where once the “washerwomen” gossiped, Mayor Dr. Silvie Ristow and night watchman André Schaper talked about flood protection.

Not so long ago was the flood of the Saale in Bernburg, explained the participants in the tour. In 2013, the water caused millions of euros worth of damage. The zoo Bernburg was particularly hard hit. The park had to remain closed from June 3 to August 2. The zoos in Aschersleben, Halle and Leipzig as well as several private helpers took in numerous animals for several weeks at that time.

From the experience of 2013, the flood of the century in Bernburg, they have since invested several million euros in flood protection and continue to expand it. Therefore, it was also interesting for the guests from Bernburg to see how the city of Rheine protects itself against such heavy rain events.
