Rheine at the anniversary in the twin town Trakai

Mayor Dr. Peter Lüttmann as well as Reiner Wellmann and Winfried Hülsbusch represent the city of Ems

Trakai/Rheine. With a festive parade of all twin towns of the city of Trakai, the celebration of the 700th anniversary of the medieval capital of Lithuania has experienced a first highlight on Saturday. Representatives from Georgia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Poland and Germany marched in a procession through the city to the festival stage. There, among others, the German ambassador in Lithuania, Matthias Sonn, and members of parliament congratulated Rhein’s long-standing twin town on its 700th birthday. Folklore performances and lots of music followed on the stage. The street from the entrance to the town to the Galvesee had been transformed into a small market.

Already on Friday evening, Mayor Andrius Satevicius had welcomed the guests on the shore of Lake Galvez, and at a festive dinner the partnership with the new twin town Schönebeck in Saxony-Anhalt was signed. Schönebeck is a neighboring town of Rheine’s twin town Bernburg. The delegation from Rheine had interesting conversations with the people from Schönebeck, who also have a long history of salt and expressed interest in the presentation and reappraisal of the topic of salt in Rheine.

In the evening a large laser show took place on the shore of the Galvesee, where the Inselburg was illuminated in a magnificent way. Afterwards, the anniversary was celebrated on a large stage at the lake until late into the night with lots of music. Further reporting follows
