Partners paddle in unison

Meeting of the Städetpartnerschaftsverein Rheine with the committee from Borne on the river Ems

In a small training course Jochen Bruns explained the special way of paddling in a dragon boat

RHEINE. Why not go on the water – the board members of the town twinning association Rheine had thought about when they invited the partner committee Borne to the traditional partner day. And so they met last Saturday on the premises of the PC Emsstern to exchange news over coffee and cake, to find the right course together on the water, so to speak, and then to review what they had experienced over dinner at the Boten Veit on Borneplatz – but also to look to the future again. Because next year the 40th anniversary of the town twinning Rheine – Borne will be celebrated. And there are some ideas!

At the coffee break in the clubhouse of the PCE, chairman Reiner Wellmann first welcomed the guests from the Netherlands very warmly. He thanked PC Emsstern, which had not only provided its large dragon boat for the excursion on the water. Board member Jochen Bruns had agreed to steer the boat and to give the guests information about the club beforehand as well as to contribute interesting details about buildings, nature conservation and the history of water sports in Rheine during the trip.

Theory was followed by practice.

The participants experienced that dragon boating can be a tough sport during a short sprint towards Ludgerusbrücke. The paddlers paid a short visit to the city center, turned around shortly before the weir, and were then eagerly awaited at the pier. Because not all members had come along.

After a “Anlegeschluck”, where they toasted to the successful tour, everyone drove to the Borneplatz, where the partners ended the day with dinner. But they will probably meet again soon, because the activities for the anniversary year are to be tackled together already now. For example, it is the declared intention of both sides to rework the cycle path that was worked out many years ago and which connects the two towns, and to provide it with further tourist information and interesting sights along the route.

Hosts and guests toasted to the partnership at the concluding dinner on Borne Square.

And the next joint event will be a public concert of the “Overijssels Byzantine Men’s Choir” on November 13 at 5 p.m. in the town church of St. Dionysius. Preparations for this have just begun.
