Maria Mediatrix ready for first group of refugees

Today, Wednesday, March 30, the first group of Ukrainian war refugees is expected in Maria Mediatrix. It concerns a maximum of 50 refugees, who will take up residence at the site in Azelo. How many refugees will actually arrive on Wednesday will be determined by the Twente Safety Region (VRT).Maria Mediatrix has been working hard on the premises for the past few weeks to get started as quickly as possible. The sleeping quarters and living quarters are ready after a thorough refurbishment and cleaning. “But an awful lot had to be done besides that as well,” explains location manager Frank Polman: “We can now offer the first fifty people a good and safe place.” In addition to the facilities, 24-hour security is present on and around the premises. Interpreters and a janitor are also employed to ensure that both the reception and the daily routine run smoothly: “The people must be able to knock on the door at any time of day. Whether it’s medical care or just for a chat,” said alderman Martin Velten.Volunteers A lot of help has been offered and work has been done by volunteers. “It’s impressive that so much is being thought and brought in,” the alderman thinks. But the location manager also urges people to keep contacting him via Polman: “This way we keep an overview and we are not constantly busy with things that are brought spontaneously and then all have to find a place.”De Zwanenhof For the reception of Ukrainian refugees, the municipality maintains a range of 250 to 350 refugees in the municipality of Borne. This includes the reception at De Zwanenhof, where about 70 people are being received at the moment.
