Walking football at BVV Borne as a guest of SV Germania Hauenhorst

Rheine/Borne. It was a small premiere in the context of the town twinning Rheine-Borne: Last Wednesday, a walking football group from BVV Borne met a team from Germania Hauenhorst at the Waldparkstadion of SV Germania Hauenhorst. Eleven players from the Netherlands had made the 65-kilometer journey to Hauenhorst – wearing bright yellow soccer shirts and in good spirits. The atmosphere was already great before kick-off: first a photo was taken together, then the players took to the pitch. Under the confident direction of match director Max Mendrina, four ten-minute matches were on the program.

The game began evenly poised, with the score remaining 0-0 for a long time before Siggi Methner finally broke the spell and scored the first goal of the day. The visitors put up a strong fight – and after the score was 2:2 at one point, the Germans went one better. In the end it was 7:2 for the hosts. Enjoyment of the game and plenty of movement were clearly the focus – and when the opponents look a few years older on average, it makes the sporting performance all the more impressiveSome spectators had gathered on the sidelines and created a great atmosphere. After the final whistle, it was seamlessly over to the social part: Over cool drinks and freshly grilled sausages, we talked shop, laughed and, of course, arranged the next meeting. After all, the Hauenhorst footballers didn’t miss the invitation to the return match in Borne twice – the anticipation is great!

Special thanks go to Cor Ordelmans, contact person for walking football at BVV Borne, who maintains a direct line between the clubs. This game has once again shown how sport connects people – across borders, with lots of fun and a strong sense of community. The town twinning association Rheine and the partner committee Borne have been striving to expand the sporting encounters between teams from Rheine and Borne for a year now. For example, there are currently talks about school and youth teams from Borne taking part in the Rheiner city championships, which are traditionally held in the hall between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
