Pedestrian traffic check in AltenRheine

Rheine. The pedestrian traffic check in AltenRheine met with a great response and positive feedback. The aim of the tour, which took place at the end of April and was attended by parents’ representatives, the senior citizens’ advisory council, the school care committee, the advisory council for people with disabilities, citizens and, last but not least, representatives of the Alten district advisory councilRheine, is to draw up a list of measures to eliminate weak points or danger spots.

Attractive, barrier-free footpaths are not only the basis for self-determined mobility, but also contribute to a better quality of life and safety. With this in mind, the city’s mobility and transport planning department at Rheine carries out regular pedestrian traffic checks in the urban areas of Rheine in accordance with a resolution passed by the building and mobility committee.

Key points of the inspection in AltenRheine were the review of routes to school and the situation at the Canisius School. “Here, the lack of safe crossing options for schoolchildren and additional sources of danger from parent cabs represent a field of action that must be addressed with high priority and a short-term implementation horizon,” stated Michael Wolters, organizer of the footpath check programme from the city’s mobility and transport planning department Rheine. His colleague Olga Tews, traffic planner, added: “We can also recommend clearer red markings at the junction to the school from Bergstrasse into Lange Riege, as requested by the parents’ representatives and the school staff.”

Major infrastructure and marking work documented during the inspection will now be professionally processed and presented to the traffic working group for discussion at the regular meeting in the fall. Numerous reports of minor pavement damage, missing signage or bollards obstructing traffic will be passed on to the road maintenance department of Technische Betriebe at short notice. The pedestrian traffic checks will be continued. The next event will take place in the fall on September 30, 2024 in Hauenhorst.
