The extreme rainfall in recent days has caused several rivers and water retention systems in the Steinfurt district to be full and in some cases overflowing.
The current hotspots are Rheine, Emsdetten, Greven and Lotte. Emergency services from fire, police, rescue services, government and various relief organizations such as THW and DLRG have been fighting the floods since Christmas Eve.
In view of the current situation, the Steinfurt district emergency services are calling on people to
- avoid the affected areas at all costs and drive around them as much as possible,
- not to “explore” flooded roads and paths
- on no account enter or enter the water or other flooded areas. There is an acute danger to life here!
- Do not stay in basements or underground parking lots when there is a danger of flooding,
- Follow the instructions of local emergency services.
The current weather situation can be found in the local media. Further information and instructions can also be found in the NINA warning app.

CURRENT SITUATION IN Rheine:
2:23 p.m. – The Falkenhof Museum is closed until further notice; the streets Thiemauer and Tiefe Straße are closed.
2:23 p.m. – Mühlenstraße is partially flooded. Large parcels have already been set up by the TBR and THW. Further large parcels are currently being added as the water is currently rising.
More rain is predicted for the next 36 hours. The river level will continue to rise accordingly. The fire department Rheine, the city, technical services and THW are monitoring the situation and working hard to protect the city center from further flooding.
Due to the flooding of the Ems, some roads and country lanes around Rheine are already closed. The city therefore urges all citizens to respect the closures. Since paths and roads are not recognizable due to the water, there is an increased risk of accidents in this area! Forests should also be avoided because the overwet ground and forecast winds mean that trees are no longer stable and may fall over.
If you have an emergency, you can still call 911!
