First-time voters influence the European elections on June 09

School project of the Gesellschaft für Sicherheitspolitik e.V. EUROPE DIRECT and the Europaunion Steinfurt e.V. in Rheine

On June 9, 2024, elections to the European Parliament will take place across Europe. A new feature of this election in June 2024 is that young adults aged 16 and over will be able to vote in the European elections in Germany for the first time.

In order to make young first-time voters aware of the European elections and the importance of active voter participation, the Gesellschaft für Sicherheitspolitik e.V., EUROPE DIRECT and the EuropaUnion Steinfurt e.V. have offered and organized support to secondary schools in Rheine in preparing for these European elections at school. In addition to informative teaching units with speakers from the European Commission’s EUROPE DIRECT speaker pool, simulation games and simulations on current political and economic European challenges as well as examples for the development of communicative advertising elements for the European elections will be offered in the coming weeks.

Young first-time voters are a factor that should not be underestimated and will influence the outcome of these elections. They should be motivated to use their vote to influence the composition of the future European Parliament and to realize that they are also helping to shape their own future in Europe through their vote. Especially in these politically and economically turbulent times, it is important to cast your vote for a democratic, united and strong Europe based on the rule of law. Europe will only be able to assert itself in the long term if it is united and can speak with a clear voice. The prosperity of all of us therefore also depends on the newly elected European Parliament being able to effectively represent the common European interests politically and economically.

The events will take place over the next few weeks at Emsland Gymnasium, Kopernikus Gymnasium, Gymnasium Dionysianum and Kaufmännische Schulen.

The Gesellschaft für Sicherheitspolitik e.V., EUROPE DIRECT and the Europa-Union Steinfurt e.V. have been deeply committed to the European idea for years – a united and democratic Europe is the largest and most effective peace movement – and will therefore continue to accompany and support the school projects.
