Numerous events in preparation for the European elections on June 9

Rheine. Before the European elections in 2019, the campaign weeks “Wake up! ‘#EuropaMachen’, which were held at Rheine. Numerous events provided information about Europe, called for people to vote and ultimately ensured an above-average voter turnout in the Ems city.

The organizers would like to not only achieve this result again in the European elections on 9 June, but possibly even surpass it. This is because young people aged 16 and over are allowed to go to the polls for the first time in this election. The planners also have this potential in mind.

The initial plans were presented in the town hall today. Mayor Dr. Peter Lüttmann emphasized that the world has changed dramatically since the election five years ago. He cited Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the armed conflicts in the Middle East.

Highlights of the events already planned under the motto “EUR(H)OPE – For the future” include

The “Long Europe Night” on Saturday, May 4. “Winning people for Europe where they are in a positive mood. With offers that encourage them to think pro-Europe” is the aim of this evening, explained Dr. Angelika Kordfelder, Chairwoman of the non-partisan Europa-Union Steinfurt and her deputy Bernd Weber. Mayor Lüttmann is making the town’s cultural facilities available for this purpose. The inner-city restaurants could also benefit from this additional offer. This Long European Night will begin with an ecumenical church service in St. Dionysius.

The European Union Steinfurt, the Association for the Promotion of Town Twinning and the Society for Security – section Rheine are planning numerous events as part of the “Europawiese”.

The State Center for Political Education will also be there with its bus tour on the European elections. Information about Europe and the European elections will be provided on around 100 square meters.

The “Simulation of the European Parliament”, which will be offered on Tuesday, March 19, for pupils from vocational schools and upper secondary schools in the Steinfurt district and surrounding area, should be of particular interest to pupils. It will be held in the meeting room of the Steinfurt district hall. There are no participation fees and lunch is included. The registration deadline is February 29.
