A visit to the Falkenhof Museum Rheine on Sunday, January 28 is particularly worthwhile for anyone interested in history. The “History Day” starts here at 11.30 a.m. – an event with short lectures and a special guided tour on the history of the Ems town. To kick things off, local historian Hartmut Klein will focus on the pre-industrial salt extraction at Huckberg near Bevergern and Rothenberg near Wettringen; both salt works were forerunners of the Gottesgabe salt works in Rheine and the use of the brine springs there can be traced back to the 14th century. Dr. Christof Spannhoff, director of the Mühlenhof open-air museum and a proven expert on the history of the Nordmünsterland region, will give an overview of Westphalian salt history. Following these two short lectures, culture prize winner Andre Schaper will take the participants on a 20-minute guided tour of the outdoor area between the Falkenhof and Ems, focusing on the new installation of the Jewish gravestones near the Mühlentörchen.

There will then be time for a lunch break together before two more exciting short talks at 2 pm. Oliver Raß M. A., research volunteer at the municipal museums Rheine, will present his findings on the workforce at the salt works in Rheine in the 18th and 19th centuries. Finally, Dr. Peter Rohlmann and honorary heritage officer Stefanie Remberg from the “Historische Altstadt Rheine” association will provide an insight into the association’s work and the current status of research into the Münstermauer 27 house. In future, adults and children will be able to travel back in time in this rare surviving example of a residential and farm building belonging to a middle-class family in Rheine. The lecture program will last until around 3.15 pm, after which there will be an opportunity to visit the special exhibition “Salt. Stories of the white gold from Rheine”, where exhibition curator Dr. Christiane Kerrutt will be happy to answer questions about the documents and objects on display.

Registration is essential for participation in the “History Day”, as a small snack and drinks will be provided for the lunch break (contribution towards expenses €7). Registration is possible until January 23 by e-mail to or by telephone on 05971 – 939 711.
