City of Rheine calls for self-picking

Yellow Ribbon” harvest project against food waste

The apple trees in Rheine are sitting full of delicious fruit. To ensure that surplus fruit does not spoil, ZEHN – Center for Nutrition and Home Economics Lower Saxony – is initiating the “Yellow Ribbon” harvest project for the third time, in which the city of Rheine is also participating. The yellow ribbon around an apple tree shows: Here, self-pickers* can harvest fruit for their own use free of charge and without consultation.

Rheine. Yellow ribbons primarily adorn apple trees in the Rheine area. The fruit harvest will continue until October. With the yellow ribbon, apple tree owners mark the trees from which self-pickers are allowed to collect fruit for their own use without consultation and free of charge. This saves surplus fruit from spoiling. Those who wish to pick their own fruit should note the following: Fruit should only be picked within reach or collected from the ground. Climbing trees is not permitted. Also, do not confuse the yellow ribbon from the harvest project with other ribbons: In orchards, for example, binding material made of yellow rubber is used to support straight growth. Harvesting is only allowed at sites with paper ZEHN Yellow Ribbons and site release notices.

Website with locations

Self-pickers* can find an overview of the many locations on the website www.zehn-niedersachsen.de/standortkarte. In Rheine can be picked, for example, at numerous trees in the Salinenpark. “Last year, the yellow ribbons placed there by TBR were removed several times by unknown persons. Nevertheless, self-picking is also allowed in Salinenpark,” explains Milena Schauer, Assistant Commissioner for Planning and Construction. The city of Rheine and the Technische Betriebe are working to ensure that the harvesting project is implemented in the region. Anyone who feels like saving food from spoiling or harvesting fruit themselves can get more information about the harvest project from Franziska Moß from the city of Rheine (05971/939 460, or from the ZEHN website at www.zehn-niedersachsen.de/gelbesband.
