Case of bird flu detected in nature zoo Rheine

Currently no danger for visitors – visit still possible

Steinfurt district/Rheine. In the nature zoo Rheine a young crane is infected with the disease-causing form of the bird flu. This communicates the veterinary and food monitoring office of the circle Steinfurt. The office has determined the disease of the animal yesterday, April 13, after it was confirmed by a laboratory.

So that the pathogen of the bird flu cannot spread further within the bird population, the district veterinary office and the nature zoo immediately took necessary measures. For example, there are now certain cordoned-off areas that the public cannot enter temporarily. Also, the birds are housed in such a way that they cannot have contact with wild animals.

In addition, district veterinarians have taken samples at all of the zoo’s bird-keeping sites to get an overview of whether the pathogen has spread. Initial laboratory results are expected to be available on Monday. After that, a decision will be made on how to proceed.

Because according to current knowledge there is no danger to visitors, the nature zoo Rheine remains open.
