Archives expanded with prescription book 19th-century doctor

On Thursday, July 20, 2023, the municipal archives were expanded with the recipe book of the Born rural healer J.B. Schoemaker (1799-1879). Ben Schoemaker, a distant relative of the doctor, handed the recipe book -which had been in his attic for seventy years- to Mayor Jan Pierik. Martin Thiehatten, an active member of the Born genealogy, was also present to explain the life and work of J.B. Schoemaker. This took place at café de Ster, in the building where the doctor used to work.

J.B. Schoemaker was a country physician in Borne from 1820 to 1878. Such doctors performed a wide range of medical procedures, and were therefore important for the health of the rural population. Since the start of his training in 1816, he kept a prescription book. It is a fine addition to the municipal archives of Borne.
