“A self-initiated play – without words”.

In the intercultural meeting center, Centro S. Antonio

Rheine. cpr. To present a play “only” figuratively? Young people from the Nelson Mandela School have shown in a project of the specialist service Migration and Integration of Caritas Rheine that it can work. Together with two experienced theater pedagogues Sophia Grüdelbach and her colleague Sina Plem, the young people initiated a theater play in four days, to which they gave a special character with their self-designed masks. The project took place in the second week of the fall vacations in the intercultural meeting center of Caritas Rheine, Centro S. Antonio at Ludwigstraße 9.

Together with the young people, the theater educators designed creative and varied days to create new perspectives and opportunities for experience for the young people. For example, they learned to portray their feelings in a still image, to build trust among themselves in a “blind” walk, or to present their artistic skills in the creation of masks. The goals included strengthening the self, promoting sensory perception and togetherness, and learning about relaxation and concentration exercises. “Will we have the project again next vacation?” asked one enthusiastic project participant, beaming as he said goodbye.

“At the end of this week, the young people were able to present a great play without words to their parents and siblings. Everyone was full of pride and joy. This week showed that playing theater is another way of learning together and getting along with each other,” said Kevin Löcke from the Migration and Integration Service at Caritas Rheine, summing up the week. The project was financed by the action program “Catching up with Corona” of the Federal Ministry for Families, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth.
