Europe Committee meets in Rheine’s “Guter Stube” (good room)

Municipal representatives from all over Germany guest in the Emsstadt for two days

Rheine. For many years, Rheine’s former mayor Günter Thum was chairman of the European Committee of the German Association of Towns and Municipalities. In the meantime he is honorary chairman of this committee.

Günter Thum (photo) is to be owed it that the European committee for the third time in Rheine tagen, so the committee chairman Rainer Jürgensen from Moorrege in south Holstein in its greeting.

With Jürgensen approximately 30 representatives of cities and municipalities from completely Germany meet since today in the Emsstadt.

Mayor Dr. Peter Lüttmann)(l.) welcomed them warmly in the “good room” of the city Rheine, in the Falkenhof.

Right at the beginning of the agenda, there was a change at the helm of this committee: Amtsdirektor A.D. Rainer Jürgensen has meanwhile retired and is thus leaving as a member and chairman of the committee. Thomas Schmidt (Teltow) was unanimously elected as the new chairman.

The German Association of Towns and Municipalities (DStGB) represents the interests of German towns and municipalities. Through 17 member associations, 11,000 large, medium-sized and smaller municipalities are organized and networked via the DStGB. The German Association of Towns and Municipalities operates independently of political parties and without state subsidies. The membership of its bodies is based on the vote of the electorate in local elections.

The European Committee:

Municipal policy and European policy are directly intertwined. More than 60 percent of all laws and regulations relevant to municipalities are caused by the EU. Municipal policy issues are also strongly influenced in Brussels: reason enough for the German Association of Towns and Municipalities to effectively represent the interests of German towns and municipalities in Europe.
