“What made Rheine great”

Project days of the Kopernikus-Gymnasium in the “House of the little people”

Rheine. “What made Rheine great” is the theme of this week’s project days at Copernicus Grammar School. Eleven pupils learned that the “little people” and their hard work are an essential part of this during a video project at Münstermauer 27. This centuries-old monument is also known as the “house of the little people”. It fascinated the young people not only with its historic “brick staircase” and the still existing and clearly visible section of the city wall in the cellar – and offered the young filmmakers plenty of inspiration. Interested parties can see the results at the Open Monument Day next Sunday (September 14), when the short videos will be shown in the former living room.

Local historian Angelika Pries, who has researched and published extensively on Haus Münstermauer, first gave the pupils an introduction to the beginnings of textile processing in Haus Münstermauer 27. The young people then set off in groups of four. They came across many interesting places, including, of course, the “outhouse” in the courtyard. 13-year-old Lya had heard from her grandmother that there used to be such a thing. Now the “thunderbolt” of the wall house will probably also be the focus of some films…

It was also a surprise for most of them to see a section of the 13th century town wall in the cellar of the house. And in general: that up to eight people lived in the building in a very small space – unimaginable for most young people today.

The four short films (each about two minutes long) will be shown non-stop on a large screen on Sunday. The Historic Old Town Association Rheine is also offering hourly guided tours on the occasion of Monument Day from 11 am to 5 pm. However, due to the small size of the building, the number of participants is limited to a maximum of twelve people per tour. Anyone wishing to pre-register for one of the guided tours, which always start on the hour, can do so at the email address . However, these registrations will only be accepted until 12 noon on Saturday. www.historische-altstadt-Rheine.de
