Pupils from Rheine visit the Portuguese partner city
Once again this year, a student exchange is being organized between Rheine and the city of Leiria in Portugal. Here is the first report from the visit to Leiria:
- Day 1:
- Hello to Rheine, we have arrived in Leiria with all the students safe and sound and the first day is over. The exchange couples already got on very well on the bus ride from the airport to Leiria. Even after the first overnight stay with their families, the feedback was consistently positive. While we were waiting in front of the town hall to be received by the mayor, a group of cyclists from the French twin town of Leiria arrived. They had cycled 3,000km from Paris, with a few detours via the Jacobsweg and Fatima, to Leiria.
- In the afternoon, the students visibly enjoyed practicing the simplest steps of various European folk dances.
Day 2
Hello from Leiria, today the day started rainy but no less interesting: after a quick look at the church of Santo Agostinho, we went to the former monastery which houses the municipal museum.
In addition to important archaeological finds, the history of the development of Leiria is presented in detail. A collection of sculptures and old and contemporary paintings round off the museum’s spectrum.
The more active part of the day then started at the paper mill and first paper factory in Portugal on the Lis. After interesting explanations on the history of the development and distribution of paper and explanations on the technical function of a mill, the students were able to make paper themselves.
In the afternoon, after a group photo, we went up to the castle. The climb was rewarded with a fantastic panoramic view of the city.
The day ended with a digital scavenger hunt with a wide variety of tasks and questions. Not only was there a time limit to complicate matters. The tasks were in German and the students from Rheine had to translate them for their exchange partners.
