Under the sign of the anniversary with Borne

Der Vorsitzende des Vereins, Reiner Wellmann berichtete in der Ratssitzung für die Aktivitäten des Städtepartnerschaftsvereins.

Town twinning association reported to the council on its activities and plans

Rheine. Normally, the chairman of the twinning association Rheine reports every two years to the council on the work of this body. Because this association acts on behalf of the city Rheine.

By Corona this report was postponed again and again. All the more pleased chairman Reiner Wellmann on Tuesday evening that he could give now in detail account.

First however mayor Dr. Peter Lüttmann welcomed young humans from the twin town Leiria in Portugal. They complete a practical course of several weeks in Rheine and environment on switching of the town twinning association. The mayor thanked not only the association for organizing the exchange and providing support, but also the companies in which they are doing their internships:

The mayor welcomed these interns from Leiria in the council meeting (from left.): Núria Tomasini, Catarina Henriques, Mariana Pereira, Mariana Gomes and Cátia Carraco..

  • Mariana Gomes – Internship at the architectural office agn
  • Catia Gomes Carraco – internship at EWG and Terhechte architecture office
  • Joel Oliveira Rodrigues – internship at the architecture office Achterkamp

In his report Reiner Wellmann made special mention of the 40th anniversary of the town twinning with Borne in the Netherlands.

The council members did not spare much applause and appreciation after the presentation. However, demands were also made of the council and the citizens:

Rainer Ortel, faction leader of the UWG, noted that it is not only a matter of supporting the Sädtepartnerschaftsverein substantially by distributing municipal funds, but also through active cooperation or at least membership of the council members. “To me, that would be a clear sign of appreciation for the work of this volunteer association.”

If one considers that the association has 261 members with a population of 80,000 people, then “I am ashamed of myself – and hugely so,” criticized Manfred Konietzko (CDU). Actually it is a matter of course that at least each council representative is a member in this association.

Dominik Bems, parliamentary group chairman of the SPD said: “I would not like to miss to join the thanks for the performed work of the town twinning association.” In Rheine, he said, town twinning is not just symbols, but is actively lived. “Maybe we can all do that together sometime, too, to be even more strongly represented at events of the town twinning association.” In addition, he would like to see many citizens fill the town-twinning associations with even more life. “Exchange between people in Europe is the most valuable thing we can do in this area.”
