Open Monument Day on September 8th in Rheine

RheineOnce again this year, the Open Monument Day will take place at Rheine on the second Sunday in September. Numerous activities are therefore planned again on September 8, 2024 and the day before.

With the title “Wahr-Zeichen. Witnesses of History”, this year’s motto underlines exactly what monuments stand for: Creating identification with the surroundings and reflecting stories from the past in the present. The monuments are the focus here as “true testimonies”. They can also stand separately as a symbol of a region or a personal story. The city of Rheine invites all interested parties to take part in this year’s Open Monument Day events.

On Saturday, September 7, 2024, visitors can explore the most important archaeological excavation sites, ground monuments and suspected sites in the southern districts of Rheineby bike under the guidance of Lothar Kurz. The tour starts at 3 p.m., meeting point is the Heimathaus Hauenhorst.

The Salzsiedehaus opens its doors on September 8, 2024, from 10 am to 6 pm. There will be short guided tours between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. and children can try their hand at salt boiling in the salt workshop. The Museum Kloster Bentlage will also be open from 10 am to 6 pm. There will be a lecture at 3 pm on the history of the objects and the history of the monastery church, which no longer exists. Children are invited to go in search of the special Bentlager “true signs”.

The Falkenhof Museum is open on this day from 10 am to 6 pm. From 11 am to 1 pm, the flute quintet of the music school Rheine will be playing music in the vaulted hall, the Morriensaal and two other rooms of the listed building for all those interested, spanning a charming arc over different eras and enhancing the historical impression of the space. In keeping with this, some of the exhibits will be presented as “contemporary witnesses of history” in short guided tours.

After a good five and a half years of intensive research, extensive restoration work and several thousand volunteer hours spent on the surrounding area, the Historic Wall House at Münstermauer 27 is once again being presented to the public. Both self-guided tours and guided tours in small groups are possible on Open Monument Day. The guided tours start on the hour.

On Sunday, September 8, 2024, there will be a guided tour of the memorial for Nazi victims and the old church in Mesum at 11 am. The meeting point for the approx. 90-minute guided tour by Günter and Magda Achterkamp is the old church in Mesum.

Guided tours of the three Jewish cemeteries in Rheine are also offered. Participants can choose to take part in one, two or all three tours. The first tour starts at 3 pm at the cemetery at Mühlentörchen. The meeting point is the corner of Mühlenstraße and Thiemauer. The second tour of the cemetery on Lingener Straße starts at 4 p.m. at the cemetery gate opposite the junction with Peterstraße. The guided tour of the cemetery in Eschendorf takes place at 5 pm. Interested parties should meet at Rodder Damm at the mouth of the Eimündung to Alemannenallee. Male participants are asked to wear a head covering in accordance with Jewish tradition in the cemeteries.

The Antonius Basilica will open its doors for a guided tour at 4 pm on this day. In addition to lots of background information about the building and its history, the tour, which starts at the main entrance to the church, also leads into the crypt.
