Karaimu Street – part of Trakai Old Town and one of the biggest attraction centres in the whole Trakai district – will become a pedestrian street from 4 September. This landmark, distinguished by its authenticity and history, reflecting the traditions of the Karaite people not only in its architectural but also in its cultural and culinary heritage, is changing its image.

In order to encourage visitors and residents to rediscover this part of Trakai Old Town, not only by driving through it to Trakai Island Castle, a decision has been taken to restrict car traffic there, giving priority to pedestrians and cyclists. To this end, a project for the humanisation of Karaimų Street was prepared, the solutions for the organisation of traffic and the implementation of other sustainable mobility measures were repeatedly presented and discussed with the public, taking into account the insights and comments of the inhabitants of Trakai.

In order to ensure safe and comfortable conditions for pedestrians and environmentally friendly persons choosing sustainable mobility measures to get to know the national, historical and cultural heritage of the central part of Trakai, and to abandon the image of Trakai Old Town as a chaotic parking lot, starting from 4 September, the traffic of motor vehicles will be restricted in Karaimų Street from Šv. The traffic on Kara Street will be restricted from the Kara Street to the Castle Lookout. On 28-29 August, horizontal street marking works will be carried out during which traffic will be temporarily restricted from 8.00-17.00.

Traffic movement through the Old Town – the aforementioned section of Karaimų Street – will be unrestricted for the residents of this street as well as for special and service vehicles, as defined by the Road Safety Regulations, and will be provided with stopping islands.

We invite everyone coming to Trakai to choose public transport or to leave their cars in the free parking lots at the city’s approaches – Vilniaus Mažoji str. 2A (near Trakai market), Senkelio str. or Karaimų str. 99C and 99B and continue their journey by the city bus. If you need to drive into the city, you can park your car in the city’s paid car parks.
