The last day in Lithuania

Civic trip of the town twinning association successfully completed

Before the participants in the citizens’ trip to Trakai ended on Sunday with the return trip to Rheine, there was an extensive sightseeing program on Saturday.

Kaunas, Capital of Culture 2022 and former provisional capital of Lithuania (1920 to 1940) was the first destination of the travel group. They started at Kaunas Castle for a walking tour of the city.

AFTER THIS EXTENSIVE CITY TOUR, THE GROUP DROVE TO THE PAŽAISLIS MONASTERY. PAŽAISLIS MONASTERY IS A CATHOLIC MONASTERY LOCATED ON THE SOUTHEASTERN OUTSKIRTS OF KAUNAS, ON THE MEMEL RIVER, WHICH HAS BEEN DAMMED UP TO FORM THE KAUNAS SEA. IT WAS BUILT IN 1664 BY CAMALDOLESE MONKS AND HAS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BAROQUE CHURCHES IN THE COUNTRY. SINCE 1992 IT HAS BEEN CARED FOR BY THE ORDER OF THE SISTERS OF SAINT KASIMIR.

The return trip went along the Memel River, and the trip participants enjoyed the unique nature in this area of Lithuania.
A last stop was made in Veliuona on a hill above the Memel. Here one could take a last look at the natural landscape of the Memel.

From here, the trip continued at a brisk pace to the ferry port in Klaipėda for the return trip to Rheine.
