Rheine. Very pleased was Rheines Mayor Peter Lüttmann about the private willingness to donate for the redesign of the Jewish cemetery at the Mühlentörchen, which was a prerequisite for a state grant of 18,000 euros. “Finally it comes now to the redesign of the Jewish cemetery at the Mühlentörchen, all private donors a heartfelt thank you” said the mayor. The largest part of the overall measure, which also includes the return of six gravestones from the cemetery on Lingener Straße, comes from the municipal budget. In this context, Lüttmann met earlier this week with Dr. Bernd Windhoff (first chairman) and Martin Bergmeyer (treasurer) from the “Alter Friedhof” sponsoring association on Salzbergener Straße. The association participated alongside the inner city association as well as private individuals with a substantial donation. “We immediately felt attracted by the project and the entire board agreed to support the project,” Bernd Windhoff informed in the conversation. “With our sponsoring association for the old cemetery on Salzbergener Straße, which was already laid out in 1807, we are pursuing very similar goals,” Windhoff continued.

Extensive coordination talks have already been held with, among others, the Jewish community, the district government and experts on site, so that the implementation – coordinated by the Technische Betriebe Rheine (TBR) – can probably take place this year.
