National Remembrance Day Wednesday, May 4

The National Remembrance Day, the day on which we commemorate civilians and military personnel who have died in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, or anywhere in the world, since the outbreak of the Second World War, in war situations and in peace missions, will take place in Borne as follows:

Wednesday, May 4Borne18.00: Laying flowers at the monument at the Parallelweg (across from the station) and subsequently (approx. 18.15 hrs.) laying flowers at the Jewish Cemetery at the Twijnerstraat.

Borne20.00: Laying flowers at the monument in front of the former town hallrestaurant Dorset’.Commemoration service/Silent marchThe commemoration in the center of Borne at the monument in front of the restaurant Dorset will be preceded by a memorial service.

This year we celebrate 77 years of freedom, therefore the 4th and 5th of May Foundation Borne organizes in cooperation with the Council of Churches and the Borne community this meeting which starts at 19.00 hours and will take place in the Old Protestant Church in the old Kerkstraat.

During this meeting Mayor Jan Pierik and Pastor Jurgen Jansen will pay attention to the national theme Freedom in Unity.

Afterwards there will be a silent procession to the monument. The procession will leave at approximately 19.35 hrs from the place of assembly, the Old Protestant Church. Route: Oude Kerkstraat, Hambroickstraat, Brinkstraat, Ennekerdijk, Grotestraat, Abraham ten Catestraat, Pietmanskolkstraat.

Followed by the laying of flowers by the college of mayor and aldermen, the former resistance, town council, Veterans Borne, the Orange Committee, the Council of Churches and the citizens. Neighborhood ‘t Hesseler19.19.00 hrs.: Laying of the flowers at the Landkruis on the Mekkelhorstweg.

Zenderen20.00: Paying of the tribute at the monument on the Elhorst-Vloedbelt. From 19.45 hrs.: Choral music, 19.59 hrs.: Last Post and from 20.00 to 20.02 hrs. the moment of silence followed by the laying down of the floral tributes and the National Anthem.

FlagsFrom 18.00 hrs until sunset (approx. 21.10 hrs) the flags of all public buildings will be hung at half mast. The residents of Borne are requested to follow this policy.

Sunset21.10 o’clock: United in light. The request to the residents of Borne to light a candle inside or outside.

Additional noticeTo ensure that the laying of flowers at the monument in front of the Dorset restaurant on the Grotestraat takes place in as dignified a manner as possible, the following roads will be cordoned off between +/- 19.30 – 20.30 hrs:

1. Grotestraat/Aanslagsweg

2. Grotestraat/Hospitalstraat

3. Grotestraat/Dorsetplein/Marktstraat

4. Market square near the town hallThursday 5 MayOn May 5, the national tricolor will be hoisted from 06:01 am (sunrise) to 21:12 pm (sunset). At 08.00 hours an old custom from 1945 will be restored. From that moment on, the church bells will ring for a few minutes in Borne, Hertme and Zenderen, as a sign that peace was coming. At the municipal monument in front of restaurant Dorset the British and Canadian flags will be hoisted in honor of the liberators of Borne.
