“Memory is vigilance for the future”.

Guided tour at the memorial for Nazi victims in Rheine-Mesum on September 2, 2023

On Saturday, September 2, Günter and Magda Achterkamp offer a guided tour at the memorial site for Nazi victims in Rheine-Mesum. The focus will be on the memorial, remembrance and gravesite of the city of Rheine and the VDK-Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge NRW for the victims of war and tyranny under National Socialism 1933-1945, which was rebuilt in 2011 at the Old Cemetery of the Catholic Church Parish of St. John the Baptist at the Old Church in Rheine-Mesum.

Researched biographies of victims of Nazi forced labor from 8 nations, of 20 buried infants and toddlers of forced laborers from the textile factories W. Gröning and H. Kettelhack Mesum and of euthanasia victims of Hitler’s T4 action, murdered sick and disabled people from Rheine and the district of Steinfurt will be reported. In addition, the current status of the development of the re-erection of graves for German and Dutch victims from the Nazi forced labor camp Mesum Dorf 304, today Nasigerstr., of the Mesumer NS-Entwässerungs- und Bodenverbesserungs-genossenschaft, who were used for the recultivation of the “Mesumer Mark” at the risk of their lives as forced laborers, will be conveyed.
