LITTLE BOY ON FIRST EXCURSIONS

News from the tiger offspring in the NaturZoo

The probability that one gets at present most well-known and nevertheless still little public young animal in the nature zoo Rheine to face increases now daily: The young tiger born on 5 December undertakes ever more frequently trips from the throw box out into the large winter area.

Tiger mother “Naga” had chosen for the birth not the room prepared for it, but a small separation cage in the winter house . There are no cameras installed, and the view for the keepers was also limited, so that for a long time it was not even clear how many cubs were born.

However, it has now been known for several weeks that it is an only child. Meanwhile it is also known that the cub is a male. This turned out to be a “side finding” during emergency veterinary treatment. The animal keepers had noticed an injury to the boy’s tail that required examination. The tail had been nearly severed in half, probably due to a crush injury, and had to be amputated at that point. The little cat, survived the procedure well and will surely come to terms with the short tail.

After the sex was known, the small tiger also received a name, namely “Tailor”.

Currently, the Krefeld Zoo also made public offspring among its Sumatran tigers: twins have been growing there since November. Their father is Tailor’s big brother “Leopold”, who was born in January 2019 in Rheine together with his sisters Tipah and Zuma. Thus, Tailor is also already an uncle – but still a very young and small one, whose further development will hopefully now continue without incident.
