Huge investment decision for Bernburg

US company Avnet Inc. invests in a high-performance distribution center for semiconductor electronics

“To serve the growing market for semiconductors and electronic components and as part of the implementation of Avnet’s growth strategy in Europe, as well as to ensure our high level of customer service, we will invest in a high-performance distribution center in Bernburg with approximately 56,000 square meters of logistics space for electronic components, including semiconductor electronics, and create several hundred jobs.” This was announced today by Slobodan Puljarevic, President of Avnet EMEA, at a press conference in Bernburg’s town hall.

Puljarevic explained that the key factors in favor of the site were its central location in Europe and the convenient transport links to the DHL hub at Leipzig-Halle Airport.

Construction is scheduled to start in September 2022, with gradual commissioning in 2024, when the company plans to deliver up to 19,000 parcels a day to its more than 30,000 customers worldwide. This will complement the company’s portfolio, which is currently served from two European distribution centers in Tongeren, Belgium, and Poing, near Munich, Germany.

“We will start recruiting the required personnel step by step from now on, depending on the construction phase,” added Roswitha Heiland, Vice President Avnet Logistics EMEA. In the future, we will be looking for logistics employees as well as team leaders for sales, administration and human resources, specialists for export and import, transport management, quality management, IT experts, engineers, technicians and employees in facility management. In the future, interested parties will be able to find out about open positions on the careers page of our website (www.avnet.eu).”

Sven Schulze, Minister for Economy, Tourism, Agriculture and Forestry of Saxony-Anhalt, welcomes the company’s settlement in Saxony-Anhalt. He added that Avnet is thus part of a large group of American companies that have invested a total of nearly half a billion euros in Saxony-Anhalt and created or secured more than 5,000 jobs. “The fact that with Avnet another globally active company is coming to our region makes us Saxony-Anhalters proud and once again provides a boost for the entire domestic industry. Located in the heart of Germany, our state is an attractive location for companies from all over the world. The continued development of the business sector in Saxony-Anhalt will remain a high priority for us in the future.”

Dr. Silvia Ristow, Lord Mayor of the city of Bernburg (Saale), was also pleased with this spectacular investment for the city of Bernburg (Saale): “We are very pleased that we have succeeded in making a convincing offer together with our partners. The building site in the Bernburg West industrial area, with around 190,000 square meters, meets all the requirements that the company needs. Avnet complements the international family here, enriches us as a business location and, with the installation of a photovoltaic roof system, the use of green electricity and its eco-certification, also takes account of our development towards a more sustainable industry.”

“Our application and, not least, the speedy creation of the planning conditions here on site have paid off. My thanks go to everyone who has campaigned for Bernburg as a location in recent months. The project will not only give new momentum to the development in Bernburg, but is also another milestone on our way to becoming a Silicon Junction,” said Thomas Einsfelder, Managing Director of Investitions- und Marketinggesellschaft Sachsen-Anhalt mbH (IMG), whose team has been coordinating and supporting the Avnet settlement in the immediate vicinity of Germany’s second largest cargo airport in Leipzig/Halle since the initial contact via the company Logivest in December 2020.

Thomas Ludäscher, Senior Vice President & CFO Avnet EMEA added in conclusion: “We would like to thank the Ministry of Economics with the IMG and the Investitionsbank, as well as the City of Bernburg and the Salzlandkreis for their great support and cooperation. Many thanks also to our partners Logivest GmbH, Miebach Consulting, Verdion GmbH, Tricer Management GmbH and Firmengruppe Max Bögl, who supported us in the realization.” According to the company, the investment volume amounts to more than 225 million euros.
