Festive completion of renovated Spanjaardswijk

This afternoon, after three years of hard work, the renovated Spanjaardswijk was festively completed. After theofficial completion act by Alderman Vermorken, the opening was celebrated by residentsand stakeholders of the neighborhood. This special milestone marks the completion of a large-scaleredevelopment, in which participation, sustainability and greening were central.Working together on a future-proof neighborhoodThe Spanjaardswijk has been renewed in a unique way. Alderman David Vermorken: “Residents actively participatedin the design and were closely involved in the entire process. This approach hasensured that the new design fits well with the wishes of the neighborhood. We proudlylook back on this successful project and hope that the renewed Spanjaardswijk remains a fine living environmentfor all residents.”

The participation process during the redevelopment of the Spanjaardswijk was a pilot. The process will be evaluatedin order to learn from the points of improvement and take them into account in subsequent projects.More greenery and a healthier living environmentBy working together on a future-proof neighborhood, not only has theinfrastructure been taken into account, but also sustainability and climate developments.An important part of the redevelopment was the greening of the neighborhood. In the public space40% more greenery was realized and 58 new trees were planted. These trees were given fullgrowth sites. This allows them to contribute optimally to a pleasant living environment. The additionalgreen spaces help combat heat stress. It also makes the neighborhood more attractive andhealthier for residents.The rich history of the SpanjaardswijkThe Spanjaardswijk has a special history. The district is named after the textile familySpanjaard, which played a major role in the development of Borne. Originally, the district was builtfor workers in the textile industry. The redevelopment not only makes the neighborhood ready for the futurebut also preserves its character and close-knit community.
