Fado night, Byzantine and barbecue

Der Byzantinische Männerchor beim Konzert im vergangenen Jahr in St. Dionysius

Town twinning association has put together an extensive program

Rheine. A concert with the Byzantine Men’s Choir of the Overijssel region, a fado evening with the Portuguese Leisure Association at Bentlage Monastery and an exhibition on the subject of “60 years of Portuguese migration to the Federal Republic of Germany” – the town twinning association has some interesting events on the program for members and interested visitors in the second half of the year.

On September 1 (Sunday), the exhibition “60 years of Portuguese migration” will open in the Portuguese leisure center. The recruitment agreement between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Portugal was signed 60 years ago in March. Since then, numerous Portuguese have made Rheine their home, many of them already in the second generation. The exhibition uses large-format displays to illustrate this history, in which the Portuguese made Germany their home and became fellow citizens and friends, as Chairman Reiner Wellmann writes in his invitation to the opening. Anyone interested is cordially invited to the opening on September 1 at 11.30 am. The exhibition will be on display until September 15.

The town twinning association is holding its annual barbecue on September 21 at the Centro S.Antonio on Wibbeltstraße. The focus will be on communication and the exchange of ideas over a hearty barbecue and chilled drinks.

The Byzantine Male Choir of the Overijssel region, which has been a regular guest in Rheine for many years, will be performing again on November 16 in the town church of St. Dionysius. The concert starts at 6 pm and admission is free. Visitors are asked to make a donation at the end.

Together with the Portuguese association, the town twinning association invites you to a fado night in the barn at the monastery on November 23. The well-known group led by Joao Marques will be coming to Rheine from Portugal. Drinks and delicacies from Portuguese cuisine will be provided by the Portuguese Association in Rheine. The start of advance ticket sales will be announced in good time.

Last but not least, a group from the town twinning association will be joining their friends from the partner committee on a two-day bicycle tour in the Giethoorn area on September 28/29. The program includes a boat trip on the canals of the “Venice of the Netherlands”. www.friendsineurope.com
