Extensive mowing enhances biodiversity

The municipality started last year with extensive mowing in the public areas of, in particular, the Bornsche Maten and Veldkamp. This way of mowing is a result of cost considerations but with that it provides a positive contribution to biodiversity. Herbs and flowers get more space, creating a better living environment for insects and nature flourishes more. Extensive mowing will be expanded and applied to other parts of the public areas in Borne.

Due to cost considerations, the municipality wants to mow larger lawns in Borne, next to the Bornsche Maten and Veldkamp, less often starting this season. A big advantage is that in this way a good living environment for insects is created. Herbs and flowers will get more space.

InsectsThe wealth of species of animals, plants and flowers is under pressure and with it the cycle of nature. Insects, for example, pollinate crops, live off flowers and plants and are themselves food for birds. But it also works in other ways. Think of the oak processionary caterpillar. It has an herb as a host plant. By mowing less intensively, these herbs can establish themselves in the lawns, creating a better living environment for insects like the oak processionary caterpillar. The better the habitat for insects, the smaller the chance of nuisance from these caterpillars in the coming years.

Limiting nuisanceThemunicipality lets the grass grow in places where it is not a nuisance. Around these lawns a strip is intensively mowed to prevent overhang towards the road. The new approach results in a changing image in the public space. Many people will have to get used to it. The municipality is aware of this. Intensive mowing limits the inconvenience.

With extensive mowing, lawns are mowed twice a year. The first round of mowing will be carried out around June, the second round around October.
