Europe belongs to the citizens

Seeing voting as both a privilege and a duty – Last Sunday walk

Rheine. In order to dispel the last doubts about the importance of the European elections, convinced Europeans want to take to the streets tomorrow, Sunday, June 2, 2024, at 4 pm. They are inviting interested parties to a city walk. The walk will start at BornePlatz and, after a tour through the pedestrian zone, a call to vote on the market square will conclude the last city walk before the European elections. How does the Europa-Union Deutschland envision the Europe of tomorrow and what goals should politicians have who will bear responsibility in and for Europe over the next five years? The tour will explore these questions.

Dr. Angelika Kordfelder, former mayor and chairwoman of the Europa-Union Steinfurt, will open the round of information at Borne. Members of the Europa-Union Steinfurt will then present their ideas of a democratic, effective and sustainable “Europe of the citizens” during the walk along Emsstraße, Bültstiege, Bernburgplatz and Dionysius-Brücke. The opportunities and, at the same time, the demands placed on politicians were developed in an intensive discussion process and set out in the Federal Manifesto of Europa-Union Deutschland. These demands make it clear which rights the democratically elected European Parliament must be endowed with, which states have a right to belong to the EU in the future and which member states must fear clear sanctions. Politicians are calling for a uniform European electoral law for the next but one parliamentary election and for the unanimity rule to be overcome by qualified majority decisions in order to improve the ability to act. Europe remains a construction site, but thanks to democracy and the rule of law, it is a much better place to live than in autocratic states, where freedom and human rights are often trampled underfoot.

The final rally will take place on the market square with the election appeal by Josef Verschüer from the Society for Security Policy – section Rheine.
