Egg hunt before Easter

The breeding season is already in full swing for the penguins, and eggs are already being incubated in the caves. However, in order to prevent our population from becoming too large, not all penguin pairs are supposed to breed. Therefore, we check which eggs are fertilized and in which a young bird is developing. A flashlight is used to shine through the eggs. If an egg is fertilized, an air bubble can be seen at one end, while the developing embryo is only dark. An unfertilized egg is completely translucent. The appropriately selected eggs then return to the parents: Fertilized ones to those who may raise young, unfertilized eggs to the penguins of which there are already enough offspring in the colony.#naturzoo#naturzoorheine#zoorheine#rheine#münsterland#zoo#penguin#breeding#nest#humboldt penguin#conservation breeding#breeding
