The ecumenical outpatient hospice Rheine welcomes new volunteers

In a world where death is often considered a taboo subject, volunteer hospice companions emerge as an important source of support in the environment of a seriously ill person. “Our work as hospice companions is of great importance, as we can offer people comfort and support,” says Erich Geilmann, a long-time volunteer. “It’s a time when the importance of humanity and compassion becomes especially clear, and we feel honored to be part of this process.”

The preparation course began in April 2023 and ended in February 2024. During this time, the participants looked at their own loss biographies and dealt with the special support for seriously ill people and their loved ones. The focus was always on the respective quality of life. After all, the guiding principle of the outpatient hospice Rheine “Dying is life – life before death” means an attitude that affirms life and regards death as part of life. By sharing personal experiences and feelings, as well as the open and appreciative exchange within this group, the new volunteers now feel well prepared.

At the end, the certificates of participation were presented in a festive ceremony. Klaus Jäger, Head of the Health and Ageing Department, described his respect for this valuable voluntary task. Bernadette Graf, Anke Eberhard-Harmsen and Erich Geilmann welcomed the “newcomers” on behalf of all the volunteers and are delighted that there are now 40 companions working in the outpatient hospice.
