Monument Day at the Rheine Municipal Museums

All three sites of the Rheine Municipal Museums will be open for the Open Monument Day on Sunday, September 11, and there will be special, free offers for young and old. At 11 a.m. in the Falkenhof Museum, tour guide Marianne Probst will take visitors on a tour of the building’s history and architecture. Among other things, visitors will learn where the kitchen of the Falkenhof used to be located and that the east wing and the middle building were originally not directly connected to each other.

At 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., two guided tours start at the Bentlage monastery, also with a focus on architectural history. Guest guide Christel Mahlmann reports on the period from 1437 onwards, when the Crusaders built their monastery complex in Bentlage from local sandstone, following the ideal plan of a four-wing complex with a cloister, which had gradually spread throughout Europe since the early Middle Ages.

For children between the ages of 6 and 12, the motto this afternoon is: Off to the museum studio! Between 3 and 5:30 p.m. they can paint their own picture of the monastery under the motto “With brush and palette”. This activity is supervised by museum guide Paula Winter. Canvases and acrylic paints will be provided, along with useful tips on how to create the great picture motifs.

The third impressive monument is the Salt Boiling House, which was built in the 1740s on behalf of the Münster Salt Works. Here, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., tour guide Christel Schmitz will provide fascinating information on the history of this pre-industrial production site and will guide visitors through the house in a dialog with the visitors – with pleasure also with a detour to the former apartment of the salt works inspector, which today houses a museum for the writer Josef Winckler.

Falkenhof Museum, Museum Kloster Bentlage and the Salt Boiling House are also open until 6 p.m. independently of the programs on Monument Day. Admission, guided tours and hands-on activities for children are free. Information: Rheine Municipal Museums 05971 – 920610.
