Dealing with sleep disorders – not “only” in cancer cases

Cooperation event of the adult education center Rheine and the equal opportunity commissioners of the city of Rheine and the district of Steinfurt

Rheine. At the invitation of the VHS and the equality officers of the city of Rheine and the district of Steinfurt, the psychotherapist and psycho-oncologist Julia Nieland will provide information on Wednesday, March 23, 2022 at 7:30 p.m. at the Volkshochschule Rheine, Neuenkirchener Str. 22, on the topic: “Dealing with sleep disorders – not “only” with cancer.

Sleep well – What can I do when thoughts keep me awake? What should I pay attention to during the day and in the evening so that I can sleep well? What can I do if physical ailments disturb my sleep?

Sleep disorders are widespread and can cause pronounced distress. In the context of cancer, about 2/3 of all those affected suffer from sleep problems. These include difficulty falling asleep, lying awake for long periods at night, and waking up early. More than one million people in Germany can no longer sleep without sleeping pills. However, sleeping pills are usually not a causal therapy and can lead to new problems, for example by making people dependent. Both physical and psychosocial factors can cause sleep disorders.

The lecture informs about aspects of the development, maintenance and treatment of sleep problems and shows possibilities how affected persons can contribute to a good quality of sleep. The example of cancer will be used to illustrate how sleep problems can also be dealt with in the context of physical illness. Myths and misconceptions about sleep will be addressed. Furthermore, suggestions will be given on how, for example, a carousel of thoughts can be interrupted, and how one’s own behavior and relaxation can create the conditions for a good night’s sleep (e.g., through sleep hygiene measures).

The event is free of charge. A telephone registration under Tel. 05971 939-124 is necessary.
