City buys former river bathing facility and parts of the former sports field on the Ems floodplain

Rheine. There is currently good news from Rheiner Rathaus for the canoe club Rheine and the sport fishing club “Emsland” Rheine. Both clubs have their “home” on the Kettelerufer with a direct location on the Ems. The areas used were previously subleased to both clubs by the city of Rheine, while the city itself was previously only a tenant of the area. By purchasing this land on December 1, 2023, the administration can now conclude long-term leases with the canoe club and the fishing club, thereby ensuring a high level of security for future use.

“The negotiations with Detlef Brunsch and Hans-Joachim Brockmeier – both of whom are executors of the landowner’s will – were lengthy and complicated,” says treasurer Mathias Krümpel. “However, the most important thing is that the parties have always been fair and that a solution has been found that satisfies both sides,” Krümpel continued.

Detlef Brunsch was also very satisfied with the result: “Two hearts were beating in my chest during the negotiations. As a local politician, I naturally have a great interest in enabling the clubs to remain at their current locations. On the other hand, as the executor of the will, I am obliged to protect the interests of the owner. We have managed both very well,” says Brunsch.

In the course of the contract negotiations, the council had already decided on 28.03.2023 to dedicate Hertaweg as a footpath and cycle path, which means that it can only be used by cars to a limited extent. However, in accordance with the purchase agreement, the clubs receive limited exemptions that allow them to continue using the path. In addition, people with walking disabilities and blind people can continue to use the path with a special use permit, and boat transports and material deliveries are still possible. An overview of the new ownership structure can be seen on the attached plan.
