Town twinning association once again supports children’s facilities in Ukraine
Rheine. For more than 1000 days now, Russia has been littering Ukraine with bombs and missiles. The cities of Odessa and Mykolaiv are always particular targets. The town twinning association Rheine has been supporting children’s facilities in these cities for almost two years. Rather than choosing aid transports with high logistical effort and enormous costs, money is transferred from the donation account to the individual associations. Painting utensils, musical instruments, small sports equipment and materials were then purchased locally. Always settled exactly to the cent with a purchase receipt.
The town twinning association also aims to give the children a little joy at Christmas during the war.
The “Rukh Miroselerdja” (Movement of Mercy) association in Mykolayiv runs a boarding school for mentally disabled children and a sports school for disabled children. Last month, the association set up a mini-kindergarten in an air-raid shelter for children from poor and large families as well as children whose fathers were killed at the front. A total of 350 children are looked after here. In addition, there are around 30 children of employees of the association.
The suggestion came from the association to organize a workshop for the children. Under the guidance of a confectioner, each child will gradually have the opportunity to make their own gingerbread or Christmas cookies. The average cost per child will be around 2.50 to 3.00 euros.
A room for table tennis training has been set up in the sports school, also with support from Rheine. Now, in winter, the room cools down quickly from below. A carpet would increase the room temperature and reduce the risk of slipping for the children playing. In the meantime, a floor covering has been purchased and laid at a special price of 250 euros.
The town twinning association donated a total of 1100 euros for the food and baking utensils as well as for the carpeting.
Last year, the organization in Odessa “Renewal of Ukraine”, which has already received support from Rheine in the past, considerably expanded its scope. It now not only looks after children from Odessa itself, but also children from towns in the surrounding area. A total of 290 children in various towns and villages are now being looked after. In Odessa itself, baking workshops are also held to make Christmas cookies. In the other towns and villages, however, there is only the opportunity to buy sweet gifts for the children for St. Nicholas Day. St. Nicholas comes to Ukraine on December 19. The master confectioners are unable to travel to the villages, some of which are remote, due to the risk of bombing. The town twinning association has transferred 1400 euros to Renewal of Ukraine.
