Caritas-Emstor workshops take part in the Special Olympics in Paderborn

Rheine.cpr. The athletics group from the Caritas-Emstor workshops successfully took part in the Special Olympics sports festival at the Ahorn Sports Park in Paderborn for the second time.

The organizers were delighted to welcome the group from Rheine, as they already had fond memories of each other from last year. Back then, Julian Brinkel had administered the athletes’ oath on behalf of all participants. This year, the entire team from Rheine was allowed to run in behind the Olympic torch and bring in and raise the flag of the PaderBorner Special Olympics.

After a welcoming speech by the mayor of Paderborn, in which he expressed his enthusiasm for disabled sport and the idea of the Special Olympics, the preliminary competitions began. In the disciplines 100-meter run, long jump, shot put and the new mini javelin throw, all participants from Rheine showed impressive performances.

At lunchtime, everyone was provided with a delicious packed lunch and drinks. Invigorated and motivated, the athletes went into the final competitions. All seven athletes from the Caritas Emstor workshops won at least one medal. Julian Brinkel, Heike Grünewald, Theresa Heeger, Sarah Helmig, Sandra Misch, Nadine Engfer and Sebastian Schubbert won a total of ten medals: Three gold, four silver and three bronze medals.

At the end of the successful day, the athletes and the coaching team, consisting of Reinhild Krey, Nathalie Duscha and Henning Röttger, enjoyed a well-earned ice cream together before setting off on their journey home, tired but satisfied.

The Caritas-Emstor workshops are proud of the outstanding achievements of their athletes and look forward to further successful participations in the Special Olympics.
