Rheine also works toward a sustainable city

Three years ago the Partner Committee Borne Rheine explained in a small conference to partners from Rheine how a sustainable future is being worked on in Borne. Stalled by the Corona epidemic, the Stadt Rheine invited us on February 2 to outline from its side the development towards a sustainable Rheine. For this purpose, we were guests of the company DEOS AG in Rheine, which specializes in climate control, especially for commercial buildings and offices. As guests from Borne, the Born delegation, which included Alderman Geerdink, was first surprised to learn that this firm was responsible for the climate control at the new De Horsten Children’s Center in the Bornsche Maten

Stadt Rheine

On behalf of the Stadt Rheine, Ms. Milena Schauer (Beigeordnete in Rheine – a position comparable to alderman) outlined the latest developments in local policy regarding sustainability. Under the guidance of national politics, Rheine has taken up the challenge to achieve CO2 and nitrogen reduction targets on a number of fronts. A number of spearheads are being actively pursued:

  • Metropolitan building projects, both new construction and conversion and renovation;
  • Introduction of intelligent energy monitoring systems, both for individual households and for large-scale consumers;
  • Sustainable planning development, for example in the redevelopment of a former barracks site (only three larger parking spaces will be realized in this new neighborhood. Residents will, for example, receive a kind of public transport card and loan bicycles, parking in front of the door is no longer possible);
  • Mobility – construction of bicycle paths, traffic planning, introduction of partial systems for means of transport;
  • Master Plan Green: a fund will be established in which %1 per inhabitant will be deposited annually to plant trees;
  • Renewable energy: solar and wind farms.All this is embedded in a catalog of policy measures, for which an annual budget of €250,000 is available.

Support for business in Rheine

In Rheine the Entwicklungs- un Wirtschaftsförderungsgesellschaft (EWG) is active, an organization of and for business. The EWG provides support to local businesses in many ways, including in making business processes more sustainable and in energy management. On behalf of the EWG, Ingo Niehaus outlines the goals to be achieved and the opportunities offered. This affects, for example, company policy on

  • Investments and market position;
  • Shared use of buildings;
  • Network development and communication strategies;
  • Support in inner city development (especially towards SMEs);
  • Support in grant acquisition;
  • City marketing.

DEOS AG

Finally, DEOS AG outlines the possibilities that this ultra-modern company can offer in improving and controlling the climate within commercial buildings and offices.
