Scenario of demolition and new construction the most potential for Rheinesquare

Municipality Borne is taking the next step in redeveloping Rheinesquare. In late August, the college proposed to opt for demolishing the current town hall and allowing new construction. After discussion at the Sept. 9 image-forming committee meeting, was asked to revise this proposal. The revised proposal concludes that the scenarioof demolition and new construction offers the most potential to make the Rheinesquare a lively andattractive part of the village center again.Iconic location in the heart of Borne The Rheinesquare is located in a prominent spot in the center of Borne and has several spatialchallenges. The new interpretation of the Rheinesquare should create a lively square that attracts visitorsand entrepreneurs, fits well with the village scale and architectural quality of thecenter, and strengthens the sightlines to Oud Borne. Quality, cohesion andsustainability are central to this. A good spatial layout and completion of thepublic space is also sought, with sufficient parking facilities without increasing the parking pressure in the area.Alderman Lammers emphasizes the importance of this step: “The Rheinesquare is a place that is dear to many residentsof Borne. We want to make this a future-proof, attractive and lively placethat fits the character of our village. By opting for demolition and new construction, wecan really add quality and create space for a design that does justice to the identity of Borne.”Demolition and new construction most promising optionThe scenario of demolition and new construction is seen as the most feasible and promising development directionto realize the ambitions for the Rheinesquare. This approach offers room for a fresh start witha design that matches the identity and scale of Borne, and at the same time is future-proof.Development perspective with clear frameworksAfter the decision has been made, the municipality will start drawing up a development perspective in which thespatial frameworks, ambitions and design starting points will be laid down. This perspective containsguidelines for urban development preconditions, image quality and architecture, traffic andparking, sustainability, ecology, greenery and archaeology. It will also elaborate on the connection between theRheine square and other development locations in the center of Borne. The development perspective will be presented to the city council for adoption in mid-2026.
