Public guided tour of the Falkenhof Museum on Sunday
Charters, maps, plans, photos and other documents: At the Falkenhof Museum, you can currently experience how meaningful documents from six centuries bring past times back to life. The current special exhibition “Salt. Stories of the white gold from Rheine” builds a bridge from the 15th to the 20th century. In the Middle Ages, it was often monasteries that secured the rights to salt extraction, as they aimed to be as self-sufficient as possible with all the necessary foodstuffs. In Bentlage, the Kreuzherren also benefited from the natural brine springs on their land. When, in the 18th century, the sovereign, the Prince-Bishop of Münster Clemens August, finally had a new, modern salt works built in Bentlage, a pre-industrial business was created that was even the largest employer in Rheine at the time. The exhibition focuses on the working conditions at the salt works, the technology and the social security of the workers and provides fascinating insights into the development up to the middle of the 20th century. During a public tour of the exhibition next Sunday, November 12 at 3 p.m., anyone interested can not only see the exhibits for themselves, but also listen to the stories that museum guide Christel Mahlmann will tell about the “white gold”. The participation fee is 5 €, meeting point is at the museum ticket office. Information: 05971 – 939 711.
