Rheineur visited bonobos in the Rhenen

Zoo Society members enthusiastic about Ouwehands Dierenpark in the Netherlands

Even though Zoo Ouwehands Dierenpark Rhenen may not be as well known as those of Arnhem or Rotterdam, it is one of the large and currently most popular zoos in the Netherlands. Therefore, on Saturday, numerous Naturzooverein members made their way to Rhenen.

In Rhenen there are not only the “big animals” like apes, elephants, giraffes and many species of big cats. It is the only zoo in the Netherlands that also keeps a pair of giant pandas. However, these were unfortunately dozing off during the visit to Rheinenser.

Via an elevated suspension bridge path, one could observe bears and wolves that live in the large bear forest.

I was particularly impressed by the bonobos, which I had never seen “live” before.

“The bonobo or pygmy chimpanzee is a species of primate in the great ape family (Hominidae). Together with its sister species, the common chimpanzee, it forms the genus Chimpanzee. Both species are biologically the closest relatives of humans. The bonobo differs externally from the common chimpanzee in having significantly longer legs, pinker lips, and a darker face.” (wikipedia)
